Azerbaijani Ombudsperson to have additional authorities

Following the amendments in corresponding laws of Azerbaijan, the Human Rights Commissioner (Ombudsperson) and members of the National Preventive Group will have additional authorities, chairman of the defense and security committee of the Azerbaijani Parliament Zahid Oruj said. The Ombudsperson will have an opportunity to conduct monitoring of the military basesâ€™ detention quarters without prejudice. â€œThe draft law was submitted to the parliament and it will be discussed at the defense and security committee of the parliamentâ€.

The Human Rights Commissioner and members of the National Preventive Group will have the right to meet detainees, to learn documents confirming legality of their detention and the supervisorsâ€™ attitude toward them and to draw acts. The Ombudsperson will also have the right to make recommendations to the garrison detention facilities and to watch how these recommendations are observed.

Zahid Oruj underlined the importance of these amendments.
