Independence Day marked in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijanâ€™s Supreme Council adopted Declaration of Independence on August 30, 1991 and unanimously approved the Constitutional Act about the restoration of the state independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan on October 18, 1991. The country restored its independence 71 years later after the fall of the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan (1918-1920). The Constitutional Act declared Azerbaijan as a heir of the Democratic Republic existed in 1918-1920.

Azerbaijani people unanimously voted for the Constitutional Act, which declared the countryâ€™s independence, in the referendum on December 29, 1991 and since than October 18 has become Independence Day in the history of Azerbaijan.

The National Assembly (parliament) of the Republic of Azerbaijan approved the national anthem (composed by Uzeyir Hajibeyov and lyrics by Ahmad Javad), tricolor national flag and blazon with eight-point star and fire.

Azerbaijan marks the Independence Day on October 18 for 19 years, but it is working day in the country.
