Baku. Elnur Mammadli â€“ APA. Nine years have passed since Abulfaz Elchibey, one of the leaders of the National Freedom Movement, died, APA reports. Elchibey died in Gulhane Military Medical Academy on August 22, 2000. He was buried in the Alley of Honors.

Elchibey was one of those who led the national movement for Azerbaijanâ€™s independence. He was elected chairman of Azerbaijan Peopleâ€™s Front, the leading movement of the history of independence. On June 7, 1992, Elchibey was elected President of Azerbaijan.

Soviet troops were expelled from Azerbaijan, national currency was launched and test was applied in the entrance exams during Abulfaz Elchibeyâ€™s presidency.
