Azerbaijan State Committee for Diaspora Activities finalizes year

Baku. Elbrus Seyfullayev – APA. Chairman of the State Committee for Diaspora Activities Nazim Ibrahimov held a press conference on the results of the expiring year. According to APA, the committee chairman said series of measures were taken for organizing of Azerbaijanis abroad, protection of their rights and freedoms, informing the world community about the realities of Azerbaijan, popularization of the national-spiritual values. He said this year the Diaspora organizations organized events in the most countries dedicated to the 19th anniversary of 20 January tragedy, 17th anniversary of Khojlay Genocide, March 31 – the day of genocide against Azerbaijanis.

Ibrahimov spoke about the other important measures taken in 2009 emphasizing the establishment of Azerbaijan Information Center by the Congress of Benelux Azerbaijanis, completion of the work on the World Azerbaijanis’ Solidarity Charter. “A number of new Diaspora organizations, including Moscow-based Russian Azerbaijani Youth Organization, were established in the different countries”.

The committee chairman stated that one of the priorities of 2009 was the solving of problems of the integration of Georgian Azerbaijanis into local society. “Georgian language courses were opened in 50 of 124 Azerbaijani schools in Georgia in 2008 and 34 schools more were added to this list in 2009”.

Ibrahimov said US Congress’ allocation of 8 million dollars assistance to Nagorno Karabakh separatist regime caused protest among the Azerbaijani Diaspora Organizations. “Azerbaijanis living in the different countries of the world, including the United States, expressed their protest against this issue”.
