"Many of you have heard me say that the climate crisis is also a health crisis. I will keep saying it until my message reaches everyone," World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said during a panel session held within the framework of COP29, APA reports.

He stated that they are here at COP29 not only because of climate change itself but also because of its impact on human health.

According to the Director-General, rising temperatures lead to cardiovascular diseases and drive the spread of infectious diseases.

“Air pollution causes the premature death of 7 million people each year. Climate change also leads to food shortages, which harm children’s development in the womb and their early years,” he added.

The WHO Director-General emphasized that human health is the most compelling argument for climate action: “Climate action provides benefits for health and yields socio-economic advantages. For example, eliminating the use of fossil fuels will improve air quality and reduce the incidence of disease and death caused by air pollution, which currently claims 7 million lives annually.”
