"Türkiye's President has set a zero-emission target for 2053," Minister of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change, Murat Kurum, said during the presentation of Türkiye's Long-Term Climate Strategy at COP29 in Baku, APA reports.
Murat Kurum explained that, when looking at the volume of emissions in Türkiye this year, 72% comes from the energy sector, 12.5% from the industrial sector, 13% from the agricultural sector, and 3% from the waste sector: "Today, the share of renewable energy in Türkiye's total energy capacity has increased to 59%. In this field, we rank 5th in Europe and 11th in the world. By 2053, we plan to increase the share of renewable energy in the energy sector to 50% and the share of nuclear energy to 29%. Thus, we will make 80% of Türkiye's energy carbon-free."
The minister also highlighted that by 2053, Türkiye plans to construct 7,000 km of high-speed railways in the transportation sector, increasing the share of clean transportation (railways) in logistics from 5% to 22%.
"In 2035, the number of electric vehicles in Türkiye will reach 4.2 million. This will bring the share of local electric vehicles to 75%. In the waste sector, we will operate under the zero-waste principle," he said.
Murat Kurum stated that, over the years, the practice of sending waste to disposal sites will be gradually stopped, and the recycling rate of waste will be increased to 70%. "We will increase the number of biogas facilities," he added. The minister also announced that the climate law would be presented to the parliament in the coming days.
