I congratulate Azerbaijan on hosting COP29, Jim Skea, Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), said on the opening day of the Baku Climate Action Week, APA reports.
He noted that 2024 has been the hottest year: "Ocean temperatures, forest fires, and sea levels have all increased. This poses a significant threat to island nations. Our climate is currently in a difficult situation. A temperature rise of 1.4 degrees could lead to the loss of biodiversity and create problems related to food security. The discussions within COP29 demonstrate that we must continue scientific discussions within the UN."
"As the IPCC, we are conducting assessments. We have engaged in discussions with politicians to recognize climate change as a scientific issue. I urge the participants of this event to utilize the dialogue environment," he added.
