The opening ceremony of an international event dedicated to World Environment Day (WED) has been held at the Heydar Aliyev Center, hosted by Azerbaijan, APA reports.
The event, organized under the slogan “Inspired by Nature. For the Climate. For Our Future.”, was held within the framework of a partnership between the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan and the United Nations Environment Programme.
At the event, Mukhtar Babayev, Representative of the President of Azerbaijan on Climate Issues, read out President Ilham Aliyev’s address to the participants of the international event.
Later, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Rashad Ismayilov delivered a speech. The minister noted that Azerbaijan's hosting of World Environment Day for the first time today in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme is an important indicator of the country's active participation in the global environmental agenda, its openness to international cooperation, and the importance it attaches to environmental protection.
The minister informed the participants about the work carried out in this field in Azerbaijan in recent years and noted that several reforms are also being implemented in the field of waste management in the country.
The Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Inger Andersen, highly appreciated Azerbaijan's hosting and spoke about the work that needs to be done in this field.
Later, video messages from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) Anacláudia Rossbach, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Simon Stiell, and COP31 President-designate and Türkiye's Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Murat Kurum were presented at the event.
At the end, Serbia's Minister of Environmental Protection Sara Pavkov, whose country will host World Environment Day and EXPO 2027, noted that Azerbaijan had organized the event at a high level and stated that Azerbaijan's high-level hosting of World Environment Day serves as an example for future organizers: “Holding World Environment Day 2027 in Belgrade is both an honor and a great responsibility for Serbia,” she said.
Later, the Serbian minister spoke about the work carried out by her country in this field and provided information about Serbia's goals for next year.
The opening ceremony of the event continued with an artistic program.
