US President Donald Trump has said Washington is seeking a change of government in Cuba and plans to focus on the issue after dealing with the conflict involving Iran.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said the United States has “very good plans” regarding Cuba and described the country’s leadership as a “very tough” and “very unpleasant” regime.
“We have very good plans for Cuba. I think we need to get rid of a very tough, very unpleasant regime. I prefer to achieve everything step by step. We will deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran, and once that is done, we will stop briefly on the way back to do this. We want to help them,” Trump said.
His remarks come amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran and signal that Cuba could become a renewed focus of US foreign policy once the Iran-related issues are addressed.
The Cuban government has not yet responded publicly to Trump's comments.
