A panel discussion on "Adverse Impacts of Climate Change on the Decline of Water Basins" was held within the framework of the 29th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) in Baku, APA reports.
The event highlighted that last year, 24 million people worldwide suffered from water scarcity.
The Azerbaijani government's attention to this global issue was highly appreciated. It was stated that COP29 will not be without results.
COP29 President Mukhtar Babayev said during his speech that Azerbaijan will fight against both climate change and drought together with Colombia and Saudi Arabia: "Today, reports on climate change reflect the current state of our planet in this area. Water is the key to solving these problems. During our Presidency of COP29, we witnessed the tragic floods in Pakistan. The consequences of climate change are also visible in Azerbaijan. Not only Azerbaijan, but other Caspian countries are also concerned about the current state of the sea. Last year, as a result of the recorded heatwaves, the highest rate of glacial melting in the past 50 years was observed. We thank all the organizations participating here. To ensure the continuity of our efforts, we will launch the Baku Initiative."
At the end of the event, Muxtar Babayev urged all participating countries to further activate efforts aimed at eliminating the harmful effects of climate change.
The event continued closed to the press.
