Russia said its air defenses intercepted 419 Ukrainian drones early Tuesday, including 56 on approach to Moscow, in one of the latest large-scale cross-border drone attacks, Kyiv Post reports.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on Telegram that Russian air defense units began intercepting drones heading toward the capital at around 4 a.m. local time. By the morning, he said 56 drones had been destroyed before reaching the city.
Sobyanin did not report any casualties or damage in Moscow.
The attacks prompted the temporary suspension of operations at Moscow’s Domodedovo and Zhukovsky airports.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said a total of 419 Ukrainian drones were intercepted and destroyed overnight across 18 Russian oblasts and Russian-occupied Crimea. Residents reported hearing explosions in the cities of Tula, Novorossiysk, and Ryazan.
The latest wave came just days after Russia claimed it had shot down 660 Ukrainian drones between June 25 and June 26, one of the highest daily totals reported since the start of the war.
A Ukrainian drone strike also sparked a fire at an oil refinery in Moscow’s southeastern Kapotnya district on June 18.
Russian claims about the number of drones intercepted and the extent of damage cannot be independently verified.
