Russian nuclear weapons may be used in the event of aggression against Russia or Belarus, if there is a threat to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the countries, it is stated in the agreement with Belarus on security guarantees within the Union State, which Russian President Vladimir Putin submitted to the State Duma for ratification, APA reports citing TASS.
According to the treaty, Russia's nuclear weapons may be used in response to the use of nuclear weapons or other types of weapons of mass destruction against Russia or Belarus, "as well as in the event of aggression against any of the parties using conventional weapons that creates a critical threat to its sovereignty or territorial integrity."
The parties to the treaty view the nuclear weapons of the Russian Federation as "an important factor in preventing the emergence of nuclear military conflicts and military conflicts using conventional weapons, as well as a means of deterrence, the use of which is an extreme and forced measure."
