German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has acknowledged that he is dissatisfied with his party’s performance in opinion polls and that the government is failing to secure the level of public support needed to govern the country effectively over the long term, APA reports, citing Bild.
“Of course, we are not satisfied with the poll results. Of course, this widespread criticism also affects me personally,” Merz said during a Christian Democratic Union (CDU) campaign event in Langenhagen, near Hanover.
The chancellor recalled that Germany’s previous government had been internally divided and had lost political support so rapidly that a change of government became necessary.
“Today, we too are failing to secure the support we need to govern the country effectively over the long term,” Merz acknowledged.
