Baku-APA. Georgia's pro-Western opposition Wednesday asked the government not to rejoin the Commonwealth of Independent State, APA reports quoting Xinhua.
"Georgia will never join the CIS, Euro-Asian Union, Collective Security Treaty Organization, Customs Union and other organizations, where the occupant country is dominating and all other unions, which threaten Georgia's sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence," said Vice Speaker Giorgi Baramidze representing the opposition United National Movement.
In a three-point proposal, he also urged the government to stay firm on the course toward integration into NATO and the European Union while "maintaining de-occupation policy and non-recognition of the occupied territories."
The remarks were made in response to media reports that Georgia and Russia had been in talks regarding the former's return to the CIS.
Russian media have quoted the Russian foreign ministry as saying that an official statement would be made later this week regarding the process of talks concerning Georgia's return to the CIS.
But the Georgian government has stated that it had not been in talks with Russia on the issue.
Georgia joined the CIS in 1993 but withdrew from it in 2008 after its August conflict with Russia.
