U.S. sanctions against Iran violate int’l law: Russian diplomat

Baku-APA. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov on Thursday slammed the United States’ unilateral sanctions against Iran, calling such measures a violation of international law, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

During an interview with the Interfax news agency, Ryabkov said Russia could not agree to the "exterritorial use of the U.S. law" on Iran as these methods were "gross violation of fundamental principles of international law."

Ryabkov said policymakers need to seek agreements and prepare for compromises. "If compromise is hard to reach for some reasons, it is necessary to continue acting through persuasion," he said.

However, the trend of adopting sanctions to reach goals that cannot be attained through pressure has obsessed politicians "on both sides of the Atlantic," he said, adding that this trend showed the immaturity of politicians’ short-sighted thinking.

Meanwhile, Russia saw no evidence that Iran was pursuing a military dimension of its nuclear program, Ryabkov said.

According to the Russian diplomat, the nuclear material being produced in Iran is under the supervision of International Atomic Energy Agency specialists.

"This nuclear material has not been switched to military needs, which the agency has confirmed officially," Ryabkov said.
