Baku – APA. Russian officials say they plan to spend about $700 billion to modernize the military’s aging arsenal, APA reports quoting “The Voice of Americaâ€.
Media reports say the plan calls for strengthening the armed forces with new warplanes, helicopters and navy vessels.
As part of the overhaul, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev announced plans Friday to triple the military’s salary budget next year. An officer’s starting salary will increase to $1,756 .
Also, Russia’s Interfax news agency is reporting that Mr. Medvedev approved an initiative to increase the number of military officers to 220,000 and the number of soldiers under contract to 425,000.
Interfax quotes Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov as citing those new figures.
