A group of pensioners protest against higher tariffs in Moldova

Baku â€“ APA. A group of local pensioners took to the Chisinau Primaria [city government] building today to demand Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca reverse the Municipal Councils recent decision to double water tariffs and abolish free public transport for pensioners. The pensioners warned that if the Chisinau Municipal Council’s decision really comes into effect, they will come into the Chisinau central square to protest.

The decision in question - to raise the water rates to 9.17 lei/ton from current 5.07 lei for households and to 22.96 lei from current 20.14 lei for economic operators; to raise trolleybus fares to 2 lei from current 1 lei and bus fares to 3 lei from 2 lei - was voted for by a majority of 31 members at the 51-seat Municipal Council last week. The Communist faction did not take part in the voting. The new rates are coming into effect from this October 1.
