Ukraine advises citizens not to travel to Abkhazia and South Ossetia

Baku -APA. The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends Ukrainians to refrain from making trips to Abkhazia and South Ossetia and entering Georgia through the Adler and Nizhny Zaramag border checkpoints at the Russian-Georgian border, since Georgia has endorsed a law prohibiting foreigners to enter these territories.

Ukrainian News learned this from a statement by the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Article 6 of the Georgian law entitled "About Occupied Territories" prohibits any economic activities, international air traffic, railway traffic and sea shipping, international highway shipment, use of state resources, money transfers, funding of the said activities, or facilitation of other kinds other than in cases envisaged by the law.

According to article 8 of the law of Georgia, acts of the bodies or officials of Abkhazia and South Ossetia that were not appointed in compliance with the Georgian legislation entail no legal consequences.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs urges Ukrainian legal entities, Ukrainian haulage companies and ship owners to observe the requirements of the Georgian legislation during their economic activities.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends Ukrainian s to use only services of air companies for making business and personal trips to Georgia.

For transportation of cars from Ukraine to Georgia the Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends to use the Illichivsk- Poti - Batumi ferry.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, Ukraine has recently aligned itself with a declaration by Sweden’s Presidency of the European Union expressing concerns over mutual accusations from Georgia and South Ossetia of mortar attacks.

In February 2009, Ukraine aligned itself with a declaration by the Czech Presidency of the European Union expressing concerns over Russia’s plan to deploy its military bases in Abkhazia and South Ossetia without any agreement from the government of Georgia.
