Baku. Vugar Mustafayev - APA-Economics. Wall Street focused on wrangling in Washington over the proposed $US700 billion ($840 billion) plan to help shore up the banking sector drowning in mortgage losses. Hopes for a deal had faded but were revived after President George W. Bush again urged support for the plan.
The Dow rose 121.07 points, or 1.1 per cent, to 11,143.13. On the week, the Dow fell 2.2 per cent. The technology-oriented Nasdaq Composite fell 3.23 points, or 0.15 per cent, to 2183.34, and had a loss of 4 per cent on the week. The broad Standard & Poor’s 500 rose 4.09 points, or 0.34 per cent, to 1213.27, but shed 3.3 per cent on the week, the biggest weekly decline in roughly four months.
In European stock markets, the London FTSE 100 index fell 2.09 per cent, in Paris the CAC 40 lost 1.50 per cent and in Frankfurt the Dax gave up 1.77 per cent.
