Baku. Real Jafarli – APA. The UN has commented on the refusal of visa issuance by US to Iran's nomination for UN ambassador, APA reports quoting Mehr news agency. UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric noted that this issue bears not relations to the UN and should be resolved between the US and Iran: “Official Washington is faithful to bilateral contract known as Headquarters Agreement and provide necessary condition for issuance of visa to all representatives of the world countries”.

Hamid Abutalebi has been appointed to this post by the Iranian President and succeeded Mohammad Khazaee. Abutalebi worked as vice-president in the government of Hassan Rouhani. He previously worked as Iranian ambassador to Italy, Belgium and Australia. He reportedly has good relations with the Supreme Leader of Iran and is close to ex-president of Iran Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani. However, this appointment caused dissatisfaction in the US as he was a member of the militant group that held 52 Americans hostage when it seized the U.S. embassy in Tehran in 1979. However, the Iranian diplomat has played this down, suggesting he was just a translator.
