Carter said earlier at the start of his trip to the Middle East that he would be speaking to commanders to "get their latest reading on the battlefield situation and also very importantly their thinking about ways that we can continue to accelerate the campaign to defeat ISIL", Reuters reported.
Mr. Carter said last week that the United States was prepared to support Iraqi troops with Apache attack helicopters, operated by U.S. personnel, in the continuing battle to retake the city of Ramadi from the Islamic State, if Mr. Abadi approved. He also offered for the first time to provide American advisers who would accompany select Iraqi brigades on the battlefield.
