The protests started on Monday after the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) filed complaint with the district electoral boards for alleged irregularities in the election results for Ankara.

The crowds chanted against the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, saying "Thief Tayyip!" and "YSK, the people are with you!" before the riot police intervened.

The AKP obtained nearly 45 percent of the votes in the local elections, according to initial results after 99 percent of the votes were counted.

AKP's incumbent mayor for Ankara Melih Gokcek received nearly 44.7 percent of votes while his rival CHP mayoral candidate Mansur Yavas got 43.8 percent of votes in the elections.
