The 18 consulate staff members, including the consul general, were moved to neighboring Kuwait, Davutoglu said, adding that the Iraq Crisis Center and the Baghdad Embassy are on duty for the evacuation of Turkish citizens in tumultuous regions in Iraq.

The minister also said his country is ready to do its best to help Iraq restore normal order.

On Wednesday, a group of militants of the Islamic State in Iraq and Levant (ISIL) took control of Turkey's consulate general in Mosul, a city of two million people, and abducted 49 staff and family members, including the consul-general.

Meanwhile, 31 Turkish nationals were also taken hostage by the same militant group in a power plant in the Gyarah region of Mosul, according to a statement issued by the Turkish Foreign Ministry on Wednesday, adding that rescue efforts are still underway.
