“This is a shameful situation for humanity,” Cavusoglu said, noting that Russia has been targeting moderate rebels since it intervened in Syria on September 30.
According to the FM, civilian residential areas are also affected by these attacks.
“Russia entered Syria pretending to be fighting Islamic State. [However], 91 percent of up to 4,000 air raids they have carried out so far have targeted rebels. IS has grown stronger as a result of these attacks. The problem for Russia is not IS. Russia is in the delusion of returning Syria again to Assad and is killing opposition forces and civilians to reach its goal. More than 600 Syrian civilians have died in Russian [air] operations. Some organizations put the death toll around 800. What the world should know is that 150 of them are children,” said Cavusoglu.
Cavusoglu noted that Russia's air strikes on the civilian population pretty soon after the final decision of the UN Security Council on Syria is insincerity and disregard of international opinion.
The FM urged Russia should immediately give up targeting moderate opponents and civilians, otherwise, the Syrian conflict will continue for years, terrorism won’t be ended.
“Russia has already turned out to be a party of the conflict and stood against the Syrian people. The Syrian people have a great endurance and they will cope with the violence. We will continue to support our Syrian brothers in their just struggle,” he added.
