“Saudi Arabia can’t cover up the crime of beheading a religious leader by cutting the diplomatic ties,” IRNA quoted Rouhani as saying at a meeting with Denmark’s Foreign Minister Kristian Jensen in Tehran Jan. 5.

Rouhani thinks Sheikh Nimr was only executed because used to speak out against the Saudi government.

“The response to criticism is not by beheading. European countries always take a sensitive approach to the issue of human rights. We hope they will express their stance on this issue too,” he said.

The president added that Iran is interested in developing bilateral ties with neighboring countries.

“Society reacts to the crime committed against Islam and human rights. Saudi Arabia has severed diplomatic ties with Iran in order to cover up the crime of beheading the religious leader. Iran supports a negotiated solution to differences of opinion between countries. The current situation in the region calls for the cooperation of all countries in countering terrorism. I believe countries in the region will unite efforts to protect the region from terrorism,” he noted.

He also said that his country is ready to cooperate with other countries including EU countries in the fight against terrorism.
