Car bomb kills 11, injures 26 in Iraqâ€™s Samarra

The blast hit Samarra’s popular fruit market in the Jiberia neighborhood on Thursday evening, when a large number of people normally take to the market to buy cut-price groceries.

Three women and two children were among the dead, while 26 others were wounded.

The attack came a day after a wave of shootings and bombings claimed the lives of at least 75 people. More than 200 people were also wounded in the violence.

Most of Wednesday’s attacks targeted parking lots, outdoor markets and restaurants in Shia districts in and around Baghdad.

It was the latest in the surge of violence in Iraq, which has killed more than 3,700 people so far this year.

According to AFP figures, more than 600 people have so far been killed in Iraq in August.

The United Nations says a total of 1,057 Iraqis, including 928 civilians, were killed and another 2,326 were wounded in terrorist attacks throughout the country in July -- the deadliest month in Iraq since 2008.
