The attack targeted an area in the Lashkargah, the provincial capital of Helmand, where the offices of the provincial governor and the police headquarters are based, according to the Omar Zawak, spokesman for the provincial governor.
Zawak did not specify whether Afghan officials were among the casualties. "Too early to talk about them. Further investigation is underway," he said.
"Several governmental buildings were partially damaged. Doors and windows were shattered," a local journalist, named Zaheer, told The Anadolu Agency. "It was a truck bomb attack. More than 40 people were injured."
The area where the explosion took place is guarded by tens of soldiers and fortified against attacks with concrete walls.
The attack broke a short period of relative peace as the Afghan government seeks to bring Taliban militants into peace talks.
