Baku-APA. Nearly 40 people were trapped and eight others injured Saturday as a coal mine collapsed in northern Afghan province of Samangan, a provincial government spokesman said, APA reports quoting Xinhua.
The incident occurred in Abkhorak mine in Ro-e-Dohab district of the province at midday, spokesman Mohammad Seddiq Azizi told Xinhua.
About 40 local workers were feared trapped under the debris, he said, adding a rescue operation was underway in the province 215 km north of Afghan capital Kabul.
The Afghan government has recently closed down several coal mines for fear of collapsing in northern provinces.
A total of 11 workers were killed in a similar incident in neighboring Baghlan province last December.
