The Istanbul Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation into the "boycott" calls made to the public.
Investigation Launched into Boycott Calls
In a statement to Anadolu Agency, the Turkish Prosecutor General's Office stated that an investigation has been launched into those who made "boycott" calls on traditional and social media, which aim to prevent a part of the public from engaging in economic activities, as well as those who spread these calls.
Legal Basis of the Investigation
The investigation is being conducted on charges of "hatred and discrimination" and "inciting the public to hatred and hostility."
Complaints of Workplace Violence Included
The report also noted that investigations into complaints about physical and verbal violence in some workplaces following the calls have also been combined with this investigation.
Political Context of the Boycott Calls
According to APA, during the protests held after the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, Republican People's Party (CHP) Chairman Özgür Özel called on his supporters not to use certain brands and restaurants. The brands and restaurants on Özel's boycott list mainly belonged to entrepreneurs whose holdings also include media companies. Özel justified his call by saying that some media outlets were not covering the protests and were taking a biased stance.
Social Media Impact and Business Repercussions
Özel's call was widely shared on social media, with lists of various brands and businesses claiming to have suffered material and moral damage.
