Former Chairman of the Republican People's Party (CHP) Özgür Özel announced at the party's parliamentary group meeting today that he was bidding farewell to the CHP and would establish a new political party, APA's Türkiye bureau reports.
Özel said the new political organization would operate under the name "New Party."
Emphasizing that they would continue their political struggle, Özel said: "When everything is over, we will never be forgetful. We will remember those who stood by us as friends, and those who did not, without forgetting how they behaved during these days. History will record everyone exactly as they acted during this period."
According to the report, Özel and his team aim to turn the new party into Türkiye's main opposition force. To achieve this, at least 68 of the CHP's 135 lawmakers are required to join the new party. Political circles, however, claim that as many as 80 MPs will take part in the process.
It should be noted that after the appellate court's "absolute nullity" ruling on the results of the CHP congress, Özgür Özel was removed from the post of party chairman. He was later elected Chairman of the CHP Parliamentary Group by the party's lawmakers.
