Baku-APA. Hundreds of Italian protesters have rallied in the capital city of Rome to call on the government of Prime Minister Mario Monti not to go ahead with plans to privatize the country’s water supply, APA reports quoting Press TV.

"The people are back here demonstrating because not only this government, but also the previous one have not respected the will expressed by 27 million citizens," Reuters quoted a demonstrator as saying on Saturday.

Monti’s newly-appointed government is currently under high pressure, as Italy’s borrowing costs have soared to their highest levels in years.

The Italian government’s decision to sell the water supply is part of plans to deal with the country’s economic crisis. It sees the privatization as essential to financing better services, while opponents say it would lead to higher prices.

Italians voted against water privatization in a referendum in June, which saw an unprecedented turnout.
