Baku-APA. Two Bahrain women won seats in the parliament by-election on Saturday night, taking the number of women in the new parliament to four, APA reports citing Xinhua.

Election officials announced that Dr. Somaya Al Jowder and Ebtisam Al Hijris were winners in the second round of voting that ended on Saturday.

Al Jowder is a well known Bahraini doctor and Aids campaigner while Al Hijris has been active in civil society organization.

Earlier this month, Sawsan Taqawi became the second female to win a parliament seat after her rival withdrew from the race in the last minute. She won her seat from the Northern Governorate Constituency 2, which covers several Shi’ite villages.

Nine female candidates nominated themselves last month to contest for the by-election this month. Four of them were elected as MPs.

All the four have now joined female member of parliament Latifa Al Gaoud in the parliament.
