Baku-APA. A helicopter of Indonesian military was shot by unidentified gunmen in Puncak Jaya of Papua in eastern part of Indonesia on Wednesday, killing one soldier, military said here, APA reports quoting Xinhua.
Spokesman of Indonesian Military Iskandar Sitompul told Xinhua by phone that the helicopter was shot when it was carrying out an evacuation of soldier from one place to another place in Papua at midday. "Armed civilians shot the helicopter and killed one soldier on board," the spokesman said.
However, the MI-17 helicopter landed safely on a nearby airport, he said.
Papua is homed by a low level separatist movement of the Free Papua Movement who has frequently launched attacks.
