According to Lucía Iglesias, this decision didn’t mean that the Tar is used only in Azerbaijan: “Presenting the nomination, Azerbaijan has assured the committee that Tar is being used in this country and it has particular importance for the Azerbaijani public. Iran can offer Azerbaijan to extend the current description of Tar and submit its version on tar performing, no one prevents it.”
Iran’s House of Music has objected the registration of Tar musical instrument as cultural heritage for Republic of Azerbaijan in UNESCO. Iran claims that Tar was created in the south of Iran. The Iranian side wants the registration of Tar instrument as cultural heritage of Iran and Republic of Azerbaijan in UNESCO.
Though Iran objects to the registration of Tar musical instrument as cultural heritage of Azerbaijan in UNESCO, it is not related to the inclusion of Azerbaijani tar performing into the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. UNESCO has included Azerbaijani tar performing into this list.
Since tar musical instrument and tar performing are different notions, Iran’s objection may be regarded as groundless.
