Baku-APA. U.S. Vice President Joe Biden on Friday called Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki to discuss mainly the ongoing conflict in Syria, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

The White House said the two agreed on the importance of "a negotiated end" to the conflict, which has entered its third year and killed more than 80,000 people.

The United States, currently working with Russia toward a peace conference in Geneva, Switzerland, next month with the purpose of putting an end to the violence in Syria, has been urging Iraq to stop Iran's shipment of weaponry into Syria via its airspace.

Biden also expressed concern about the security situation in Iraq, as the Arab nation has been marred by fresh waves of deadly attacks in the past days, and pledged continued U.S. support in its fight against terrorism, the White House said.
