The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced a temporary easing of environmental requirements for motor fuel from September 1 in an effort to boost gasoline supplies and curb rising prices at filling stations.
The measure will remain in effect from September 1 through September 15. During this period, E10 gasoline, which contains 10% ethanol, will be allowed to be sold with a higher vapor pressure.
US officials expect the early transition to winter-grade fuel standards to release hundreds of thousands of additional barrels of gasoline per day onto the domestic market, helping increase supply and ease prices.
The average gasoline price in the United States currently stands at around $4.10 per gallon (3.785 liters), while in California it is close to $5.60 per gallon.
