Bear attacks on cities increase in Russia, high-alert regime declared

A high-alert regime has been declared in the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky in Russia’s Kamchatka region due to an increase in bear attacks on populated areas, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky Mayor Andrey Vorovsky stated, APA’s Russia bureau reports.

According to him, from 18:00 on September 9 (9:00 a.m. Moscow time), a high-alert regime has been declared for forces and services involved in measures aimed at eliminating threats to life resulting from bear attacks in the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky urban district.

Five districts of the Kemerovo (Kuzbass) region have declared a high-alert regime due to an increase in bear incursions into urban areas. The high-alert regime has been introduced in the cities of Kaltan, Osinniki and Prokopyevsk, as well as in the Tashtagol and Mezhdurechensk districts.

It should be noted that in August, a bear attacked and injured a man near the settlement of Mezhdurechensk in the Kemerovo region. Another bear injured a pensioner near a gardening community close to Novokuznetsk. The animal was shot with a firearm by police responding to the call. Since the beginning of the year, the city’s Unified Dispatch Service has received 52 reports related to bears, 44 of which have been confirmed. Eleven bears have been shot by hunters.

Since August, reports of bear attacks have increased in Russia’s republics of Buryatia, Sakhalin, Khakassia, Tuva and Altai, as well as in Krasnoyarsk region. At least three people have reportedly been killed in bear attacks during this period.
