US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in an interview with NBC News, said that the Trump administration's failure to impose tough sanctions on Russia is because it could weaken Washington's role as a mediator between Ukraine and Russia, APA reports.
"Once we start applying tough sanctions and other measures, our ability to act as a mediator for peace will be weakened," Rubio said.
The US Secretary of State does not rule out that Washington will have to impose tougher sanctions on Russia "at some point" in the future.
In addition, Rubio strongly criticized European countries for continuing to buy oil and gas from Russia, calling it an "absurd decision." He called on allies to make more efforts to put pressure on Russia.
