Donald Trump will not “fall into the trap of endless negotiations” with Russia, the US secretary of state said amid mounting concerns Moscow is stalling on a ceasefire deal, APA reports citing the Telegraph.
Speaking at his first Nato meeting of foreign ministers, Marco Rubio told allies the US would know “in a matter of weeks” whether Russia was serious about peace.
“We will not continue this forever. We have a certain time when we will wait. We want to see during this time whether they are ready for peace or not. And the time is coming.”
He refused to give an official deadline for Vladimir Putin to sign a deal, but suggested Mr Trump’s patience was running out and said the US could ramp up sanctions on Russia.
“Congress has already started working on a bill on sanctions and the pressure from the Capitol will already be growing. We will send our message to Moscow, and we hope that Moscow will be ready for peace.”
Nato leaders earlier demanded that Putin be given a deadline to sign to a peace deal, warning that there must be consequences for the Russian leader if he does not.
