Measures are being taken to establish a new national park in Azerbaijan's liberated territories and restore the activities of existing specially protected natural areas, APA's Karabakh bureau reports.
Deputy Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Vugar Karimov made the statement at a meeting of the Working Group on Environmental Issues held in the city of Aghdam on October 30.
The Deputy Minister noted that the activities of the Basitchay State Nature Reserve and Dashalti State Nature Sanctuary have already been restored. Work is ongoing to restore the activities of the Garagol State Nature Reserve, as well as the Gubadli, Arazboyu and Lachin state nature sanctuaries.
According to Vugar Karimov, the Karabakh National Park was established by a decree signed by the President on October 20, 2026. The national park, which will cover a total area of 88,418 hectares, encompasses the territories of the Aghdara, Khojaly, Kalbajar, Shusha and Lachin districts.
The main purpose of establishing the national park is to protect Karabakh's rich ecosystem and natural heritage, restore biodiversity, ensure the sustainable use of natural resources and develop ecotourism.
The Deputy Minister added that studies have also begun on the establishment of a new national park in the East Zangezur economic region. A draft map of the area is currently being prepared.
