The conflict between the United States and Iran is exposing Washington’s military and strategic vulnerabilities, and China, America’s biggest rival, is drawing important lessons from it, former U.S. military officials said, Politico reports.
“China is closely watching the U.S. fail to break through the Iranian blockade while continuing to expend its strike capabilities. The Trump administration is searching for ways to extricate itself from a war that is unpopular among the American public, global gas prices are rising, and the Pentagon’s strategic documents indicate that countering Beijing is no longer the top priority,” the article emphasized.
As the meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping approaches, current and former military officials expressed concern that “the cards will be in China’s hands” amid an uncertain ceasefire, allies refusing to assist the U.S., and a war causing political problems for Trump.
The article also noted that China has monitored and studied the U.S. military for decades.
“They know how we project power. The Chinese are well aware of our dependence on tankers and military bases. They closely study how we conduct airstrikes, non-kinetic attacks, electronic warfare and cyber warfare — in short, everything,” a former Pentagon official said.
According to him, the Chinese understand well that every missile used in the war against Iran is a missile that cannot be used to deter China in the Indo-Pacific region.
