Baku-APA. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday sent warm congratulations to the new Dutch king, paying tribute to the abdicated Queen Beatrix, APA reports.
"I warmly congratulate His Majesty Willem-Alexander on his inauguration as the King of the Netherlands," Ban said in a statement issued here by his spokesperson. "I wish him and Her Majesty Queen Mxima every success in fulfilling their important roles."
The secretary-general said that he is grateful for the royal couple's personal engagement and valuable contributions to United Nations efforts on the issues of water and sanitation, as well as inclusive finance for development.
"I am looking forward to their continuing support for our ongoing efforts to achieve the Millennium Development Goals whilst preparing for the post-2015 Development Agenda," Ban said.
Following the abdication of Queen Beatrix, the new King of the Netherlands Willem-Alexander was officially inaugurated on Tuesday.
The 46-year-old King Willem-Alexander succeeded his mother Beatrix, who abdicated earlier on Tuesday during a ceremony at the Royal Palace.
In his statement, the UN chief also paid tribute to "the outstanding public service that Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands has rendered over the past 33 years" and sent her his "very best wishes."
In addition, Ban hailed the Netherlands as "an indispensable partner of the United Nations."
"The Hague, home to the United Nations International Court of Justice and other international tribunals, represents the face of international justice," he said.
