Baku-APA. Cuba is holding annual national drills on Saturday and Sunday, to beef up people's preparedness in the face of hurricanes, earthquakes or industrial disasters, and strengthen the island country's emergency response capacity, APA reports quoting Xinhua.
On Saturday, the national exercise dedicated to control measures taken by the Cuban Civil Defense, and Armed and Interior Forces in 2012 to reduce risks in the diverse communities deemed vulnerable.
Civil Defense Second Chief Colonel Luis Angel Macareno told reporters that Sunday will be the most significant day, due to the massive mobilization of people for anti-disaster actions mainly in high risk communities, which are in close proximity to coast areas, mountains, earthquake zones, and places where dangerous substances are manipulated.
On the importance of the drills, Macareno explained that they allow assessment of preparation, as well as what is needed to face the next cyclonal season, and how to improve people's groundwork in case of disasters.
The human factor is the fundamental element of the Civil Defence System, said the Colonel, as the success of the prevention task and confrontation in the face of disasters depends on people' s awareness and participation.
The first edition of the drills took place in 1986.
Cuba is located in the main route of the tropical hurricanes during the cyclonal season between June 1 and Nov. 30.
Cuba is internationally acknowledged for its experiences in dealing with weather events.
