Baku – APA. Police in Mexico have arrested a relative of the country’s top fugitive, Joaquin “Shorty” Guzman, APA reports quoting “The Voice of America”.
Authorities say Victor Manuel Felix was detained last week, along with eight others, during a series of operations across the country.
Felix is the suspected head of a financial network linked to Guzman’s Sinaloa drug cartel.
Guzman, who has been on the run since escaping from a Mexican prison in 2001, is one of the world’s most powerful drug traffickers and richest men. The U.S. financial magazine, Forbes, estimates he has a fortune of $1 billion.
The United States has offered a $5 million reward for information leading to Guzman’s capture.
Mexican President Felipe Calderon has deployed thousands of troops across Mexico to fight the country’s drug cartels. The spiraling violence has left at least 34,000 people dead.
