Baku-APA. A recent study says the high crime rate in Argentina is a result of social changes initiated after the ouster of Argentinean President Fernando de la Rua in 2001, APA reports quoting Press TV.

The case was studied by Argentine Catholic University in Buenos Aires, a Press TV correspondent reported.

The social transformation included a new condition in the labor market, the dismantling of the welfare system and the development of an informal economy that took advantage of a retreating state.

Meanwhile, the kidnapping of Juan Manuel Canillas in 2002 shocked the society as it was the first of such cases in that year. Canillas was murdered by three men who first stole his money and then shot him dead.

“Violent crimes have dropped to some extend in recent years but it is still a fact of life for many,” Canillas’ mother said.

According to the Attorneys’ Office of Buenos Aires, there have been 554 cases of rubbery, 21,450 cases of ’armed’ rubbery and 4 homicides per day in 2010.

An Argentinean citizen, Vanesa Lima said that her husband was murdered in a clash with two armed rubbers in 2010, when they were coming back from shopping.

Although crime rate has declined significantly since 2002 in Argentina, many still say that the lack of security is one of the biggest problems in the country.

“We cannot live like this anymore. I am 84-years old and I never thought one day I will see this day. We live like prisoners in our own homes and are afraid to go out,” an Argentinean pensioner said.
