Baku – APA. A long-awaited trial has begun for two Argentine dictators accused of overseeing a plan to steal babies from political prisoners decades ago, APA reports quoting “Associated Press”.
Jorge Videla and Reynaldo Bignone allegedly presided over the plot to take infants born to jailed dissidents, who were never heard from again. The children were adopted by families friendly to the military regime.
Videla and Bignone entered the court Monday in handcuffs along with six other defendants, and took their seats as the charges were read.
The defendants’ supporters dismiss the trial as a bid for revenge by the leftists they defeated decades ago and who now control Argentina’s government.
The trial is expected to take up to a year, with 370 witnesses to testify.
