"The President expressed his deep concern with the Libyan government’s use of violence which violates international norms and every standard of human decency, and discussed appropriate and effective ways for the international community to immediately respond," the statement said.
"The leaders discussed the range of options that both the United States and European countries are preparing to hold the Libyan government accountable for its actions, as well as planning for humanitarian assistance. The leaders agreed to maintain close consultations on this issue going forward," the statement added.
The European Union is considering implementing sanctions against Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi as the authorities in the North African country continue to use violent methods to quash a prolonged uprising.
Reports say up to 1,000 people have been killed in fighting between demonstrators and pro-Gaddafi forces and some 4,000 have been wounded since protests against longtime leader Gaddafi’s regime began February 15.
