Fast food workers in US continue protests

Several hundred protesters gathered outside the gates of McDonald's campus in a Chicago suburb on Thursday as the company held its annual shareholders meeting.

The protesters called for a pay raise to 15 dollars an hour and demanded the right to form a union without recrimination.

Protesters chanted: “We work, we sweat, put $15 on my check."

Workers from Detroit chanted: “Hey hey, ho ho, $7.40 has got to go,” referring to their minimum wage salaries in Michigan.

The demonstration comes after a similar rally on Wednesday at which 140 people, including 100 McDonald's workers were arrested.

The workers are part of an international protest against multiple fast food chains.

McDonald’s said in a statement that it offers “competitive pay based on the local marketplace and job level…. We have a long, proven history of providing advancement opportunities for those who want it.”

According to the Center for Economic and Policy Research, over half of all fast food workers are female and more than a third of burger flippers have at least some college education.

During the past year, fast food workers have staged demonstrations for higher wages, helping to spark the national debate about raising the minimum wage and addressing growing income inequality.
