A fire destroyed 208 shacks at Masinenge Informal Settlement in Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal province, on Saturday morning, provincial government officials said, Xinhua reports.
Thulasizwe Buthelezi, the province's MEC (member of the executive council) for cooperative governance and traditional affairs, said one person suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to a medical facility for treatment.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze and prevented it from spreading to nearby shacks. The cause of the fire remains unknown, another provincial official said.
The provincial government will provide affected families with emergency shelter, food, blankets and other essential supplies, Buthelezi said.
About two months ago, a fire at Jika Joe informal settlement in Pietermaritzburg, also in KwaZulu-Natal, left more than 500 residents homeless.
