Ensuring respect for international humanitarian law and human rights is of great importance for Western Azerbaijanis, who have historically suffered from foreign occupation, ethnic cleansing, and the destruction of cultural heritage, and for our people as a whole," noted in the statement of the Western Azerbaijan Community, APA reports.
The statement emphasizes that for millions of Western Azerbaijanis who were ethnically cleansed by Armenia at different times, the right of return is a special hope and a sacred duty: "Although the international conventions in force impose specific obligations on the participating states regarding the systematic violations of law committed against the people of Azerbaijan, many of them, especially the western countries, have been indifferent to this issue. They not only turned a blind eye to these violations of rights, but also encouraged Armenia to continue its infamous acts of occupation and ethnic cleansing and always prevented the establishment of peace in the region."
"Concerned about the emergence of prospects for sustainable peace in the region with the restoration of Azerbaijan's territorial integrity and sovereignty, the said forces have intensified their disruptive activities. The United States Congress, the European Parliament, the parliaments of France, the Netherlands and other countries are especially zealous in these infamous activities, which are carried out mostly through parliamentary lines.
For decades, those hypocritical forces that supported the ethnic cleansing of Azerbaijanis from the territory of Armenia and the territories of Azerbaijan that were occupied at the time, did not allow them to return, and systematically destroyed their cultural heritage, make unjustified accusations against Azerbaijan, which is the victim of all these actions.
The next infamous resolution adopted by the European Parliament on October 24, 2024 is of this kind. With this resolution, the European Parliament gives its "contribution" to the slander campaign of known circles against Azerbaijan, which is intensifying on the eve of COP29. It should be recalled that in 1988, the European Parliament, which called for the transfer of the former "Nagorno-Garabagh Autonomous Oblast" to the Armenian SSR, brought its enmity against the Azerbaijani people to an institutional level and adopted dozens of documents full of hatred and slander against Azerbaijan and contrary to international law.
It is ridiculous that such a document was adopted by the European Parliament on the day when the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia met in Kazan. The views of the crusading-minded deputies, especially from France, who seem to compete with each other in the debates, are disgusting.
We, as the Western Azerbaijan Community, strongly condemn the attempts of the European Parliament and others to discriminate against the Azerbaijani people on ethnic and religious grounds, serve to re-create the conflict in the region, and to disguise these heinous acts as "human rights protection". We will continue to expose the anti-Azerbaijani policy and attempts of these elements to advance their political agendas from human rights," the statement said.
